San Antonio -
The Trinity Tiger football team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference schedule with a 38-13 victory over Colorado College on
Saturday evening.
Trinity (3-0, 1-0 SCAC) and Colorado played a close
game for most of the first half, but Trinity scored two touchdowns in
the final five minutes to pull away, taking a 24-6 lead into the locker
room.
The scoring got started
early after Trinity intercepted Colorado College deep in its own
territory, then converted on the first play to take a 7-0 lead just one
minute into the game.
Linebacker Dylan Nealous
picked off the pass at the 30, then returned it to the 10 before being
brought down.
Quarterback Blake Barmore
hit receiver Riley Curry for the opening score. For Barmore, it
would be the first of four touchdown passes in the game, setting a new
career-high for the senior.
The two teams traded field
goals later in the first quarter, then Colorado hit its second field
goal to make it 10-6 early in the second. Barmore then threw two
TD passes in the final minutes, including the final score of the half
with five seconds left.
Trinity scored twice more in
the third to take control of the game, then Colorado was able to get
into the end zone to make it 38-13.
The Trinity offense took
possession with 10:30 to play in the fourth, then in a show of ball
control and game management, the home team kept the ball for 18 plays,
driving 67 yards before letting the clock run out at the Colorado two
yard line.
Barmore completed 17-27
passing for 209 yards and the four scores. He hit nine different
receivers in the game, eight of which had multiple receptions.
Shawn Thompson led the team
with seven receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Curry finished
two catches for 43 yards and the opening score. Caleb Urban scored
for the second straight game and had a pair of receptions for 37 yards.
Matt Moorefield had three
catches for 21 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed 11 times for 56
yards on the ground. Greg Bielski led the team in rushing with 72
yards on just eight carries.
Defensively, linebacker
Philip Kownslar finished with a team-high 13 tackles, while Lee
Patterson had 10 stops from the defensive backfield.
Nealous recorded eight
tackles overall, including five solo tackles, and 2.5 tackles for loss.
In addition to his first quarter interception and 20 yard return, he
also had a pass breakup and a 14-yard sack to push Colorado out of field
goal range in the second quarter.
Overall, Trinity out-gained
Colorado in total offense with a final tally of 452 yards, which is a
new season-high for Trinity. Colorado finished with 239 total
yards offensively, but the Trinity defense allowed just 84 yards in the
second half.
The defense allowed a
season-low 83 yards through the air, and have held all three of this
year's opponents to less than 100 yards passing.
Trinity will be at home
again next weekend, taking on another newcomer to the SCAC in
Birmingham-Southern College. The game will kick off at noon on
Saturday, September 29. |
