Trinity Bounces Back Behind Barmore's Record-Setting Day

Greencastle, Indiana - Trinity's football team bounced back after being stunned on the road last week, winning 43-28 on the road against DePauw University.

Trinity (5-1, 2-1) jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the second quarter, but DePauw stormed back to make it a 26-21 game at the half, scoring 14 points in the final 70 seconds of the second quarter.

Despite that momentum swing, Trinity came back strong in the third quarter with 10 unanswered points to push the lead to 36-21 with 15 minutes to play.  Trinity then scored to open the fourth quarter, and forced two DePauw turnovers to keep them from getting any closer than two scores.  DePauw added the final touchdown with 2:31 remaining in the game, but could not recover the onside kick to try and cut into the lead any more.

Blake Barmore threw for over 300 yards in the first half alone, finishing with a career-high 476 yards on 22-32 passing in the game.  He threw two touchdowns and ran for two more, accounting for 42 yards rushing, and giving him a school-record 518 yards of total offense.

Barmore is only the second player in Trinity history to account for over 500 yards by himself - former quarterback Roy Hampton did it twice in his career (2000 and 2002 seasons).  His 476 yards passing is also fifth in school history, behind Hampton and Mike Burton.  Burton holds the school record with 506 yards passing against Western Maryland in 1998.

Three Trinity receivers gained over 100 yards in the game, led by 167 yards on 10 catches by Riley Curry.  Curry caught both of Barmore's TD passes.  He set a new career high in yardage, and tied his career high in receptions.  Shawn Thompson and Caleb Urban both had 103 yards receiving on the day, with Thompson collecting five receptions and Urban making three.

Barmore nearly had another touchdown, but DePauw forced a fumble at the one yard line, and Chris Baer recovered for Trinity.  Baer led the team with 54 yards rushing on 10 carries and the score.

The Trinity defense also played well in the game, forcing four turnovers and allowing just 68 yards rushing overall.  DePauw's best offensive weapon in running back Jeremiah Marks was held mostly in check, gaining just 72 yards on 20 carries.  Marks had missed the last few games with an injury.

Shaun Irchirl led Trinity's defense with five solo tackles, two pass breakups, a forced fumble, and two interceptions in the game.  Irchirl's first interception came at the Trinity five, and set up the team's third score of the day.  His second came late in the game, but this time he picked it off in the end zone to keep DePauw from scoring on their first possession of the third quarter.

Raymond Clark, Will Smith, and David Morgan all picked up sacks, while Lee Patterson picked up a fumble recovery.  Brandon Grenier, Brian Marynowitz, and Chris Jones tied for the team lead with six tackles, while Marynowitz also had an interception.

DePauw's Spud Dick was 27-30 for 318 yards, collecting three touchdowns and three interceptions for the home team.  Bryan Mulligan caught eight passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Trinity returns home next week to take on University of the South-Sewanee during Trinity Alumni Weekend.  The game is set to kick off at 1:30 p.m.
