Tiger Football Downs Bulldogs in Home Opener

San Antonio - Trinity's football team erased the memory of last year's loss in Seguin with a 31-10 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Saturday night.

Trinity (2-0) led 14-0 after the first quarter in the team's home opener, then hit a field goal as time expired on the first half to go up 24-10.

Chris Baer scored three touchdowns for the Tigers, all of which came on on runs of five yards or less.  Baer also scored twice in the opener against East Texas Baptist, giving him five touchdowns since his return from injury last year.

Also scoring was Caleb Urban, younger brother of Trinity football and track & field star Jerheme Urban.  The younger Urban caught a 24-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring started less than five minutes into tonight's game.

After Urban and Baer scores in the first, Texas Lutheran finally got on the board in the second quarter with a field goal from kicker Holt Storrie.  The Tigers answered with a one-yard plunge from Baer, and Texas Lutheran turned a botched kickoff into points after taking over in Trinity territory.  The Bulldogs scored with 48 seconds remaining, which turned out to be just enough as Trinity marched down the field before calling timeout with two seconds to play in the half.  Peter Licalzi nailed a 34-yard field goal as time expired for the halftime margin.

In the second half, Texas Lutheran tried to mount a comeback, taking a 12-play drive 75 yards before it stalled out and resulted in a turnover on downs.  The rest of the Bulldog drives in the second half resulted in two interceptions, a blocked field goal, a fumble, and a turnover on downs.

Tiger quarterback Blake Barmore completed 17-26 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown, with six of those passes going to Chris Coleman.  Coleman had six receptions for 111 yards to lead the team.

Anthony Smith led Texas Lutheran with 141 yards on 26 carries, while Bryant Villa finished 12-22 for 91 yards through the air.

Brian Marynowitz led Trinity's defense with 12 tackles, and also picked off two passes for the Tigers.  Lee Patterson also had 10 tackles, and both Dennis Grebe and Philip Kownslar finished with eight stops.

Trinity has the next weekend off before opening its SCAC schedule with a home game against Colorado College at 6:00 p.m.

Chris Baer has opened the season with five touchdowns in two games - including three rushing scores tonight
