San Antonio -
The Tiger football team was able to overcome a week full of distractions
resulting from last weekend's win at Millsaps, handing Centre a 34-6
defeat in Trinity's regular season home finale on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (8-1, 5-1) led 20-6 at
halftime, scoring 17 of its first half points in the second quarter.
The Tiger offense started off slowly in the game, scoring just a field
goal in three first quarter possessions. The team then rattled off
three straight scoring drives, culminating in 38-yard field goal by
Peter Licalzi.
That second field goal of
the day for Licalzi gave him 14 for the season, which breaks Trinity's
single season record for field goals in a season, set by Todd Canion in
2002. Licalzi has hit 14-17 field goals and 31-34 extra points
this season.
Trinity's defense enjoyed
one its best performances of the season, giving up 171 total yards and
forcing three turnovers overall. The Tigers also recorded six
sacks in the game, and allowed -10 yards rushing. It was the first
time the Tiger defense allowed negative yards rushing since giving up
minus eight yards to DePauw in 2000. It was also the fewest
rushing yards allowed since giving up just -19 yards to Centre in 1999.
Philip Kownslar led Trinity
with 11 tackles overall, including 1.5 tackles for loss. Shaun
Irchirl had the first interception of the day, but Lee Patterson
recorded two picks on the day. Jeff Carapetyan finished with three
tackles overall, and all three were sacks. He had two solo sacks
and an assist for a total loss of 13 yards.
Blake Barmore had his third
300-yard passing day of the year, totaling 309 yards on 27-45 passing.
Barmore threw two touchdowns in the game - including a 43-yard
catch-and-run to Riley Curry.
Curry finished with six
receptions for 81 yards, while Shawn Thompson had four catches for 66
yards. Chris Coleman and Chris Baer each had four catches as well.
Baer caught his second
touchdown pass of the season, and also led the team with 54 yards
rushing. Matt Moorefield tallied 49 yards on the ground, while
Jonathan Plotnick had 20 yards on five carries and a touchdown.
Plotnick also had three catches for 46 yards receiving.
Trinity is one game away
from clinching the SCAC Championship and the NCAA Playoff bid for the
year. The Tigers face Austin College next Saturday in Sherman,
Texas for the regular season finale. Millsaps, winners at Colorado
College this weekend, would be co-champions if Trinity wins. |

Peter Licalzi nailed
a pair of field goals to break the school's single season record.
He has made 14-17 field goals this season.

Shaun Irchirl
stepped in front of this second quarter pass for his third interception
of the season, which led to a TU field goal and a 20-6 lead.
