Belton, Texas -
The Tiger football team had its season ended at the hands of the
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, losing 52-23 in the NCAA
first round playoff game.
Trinity (9-2) led 10-7 after
the first quarter, but a pair of touchdowns by UMHB in the second put
the home team ahead 21-10 at halftime. The Tigers drove the field
after the second half kickoff, scoring from 19 yards out to make it a
21-16 game (extra point was missed).
After the Crusaders marched
down the field on the next drive, the Tiger defense stiffened near the
goal line, and forced a short field goal to make it 24-16. Trinity
then drove into Crusaders territory on its next chance offensively, but
the team turned the ball over on downs.
Mary Hardin-Baylor turned
the ensuing drive into points, scoring from 33 yards out, then forced a
turnover on defense to get the ball back almost immediately. The
Crusader offense then punched in another score after just three plays,
turning an eight-point lead into a 38-16 advantage late in the third
quarter. Trinity managed to score once more in the third, but
would get no closer as UMHB added a pair of scores in the fourth
quarter.
Trinity QB Blake Barmore
produced his second 400-yard passing game of the season, completing
34-60 for 458 yards and three touchdowns. The 60 pass attempts are
the third-most for a single game in school history. After
Trinity's running game couldn't get going against the Crusader defense,
Barmore was forced to throw even more than usual, and he responded very
well. He was sacked eight times, though, and also threw an
interception.
Riley Curry caught eight
passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, while Chris Coleman led all
receivers with 115 yards on seven catches and a score. Caleb Urban
had four receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown as well. Running
back Chris Baer finished with just eight yards rushing, but did have six
catches for 62 yards, and receiver Shawn Thompson added five receptions
for 59 yards in the game.
Linebacker Philip Kownslar
finished with a game-high 13 tackles in the game, while safety Brian
Marynowitz had 10 stops for the Tigers.
Trinity's defense was unable
to stop UMHB's rushing attack, which accounted for 457 yards on the day.
Jarvis Thrasher had 205 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21
carries, while Quincy Daniels finished with 153 yards and a score.
Trinity's season ends with a
9-2 overall record, and the team secured its 14th SCAC Championship in
15 years to earn a berth in the playoffs. |
