The Trinity football team returned home from a two week road trip and defeated the University of the South-Sewanee Tigers 42-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (6-1, 3-1) was able to score twice in the first quarter after having their first drive of the game stall inside Sewanee territory. Shawn Thompson caught a 19 yard pass from Blake Barmore with 5:12 left in the opening frame. Minutes later, Chris Coleman capped a two play drive with an 11 yard score. Trinity led 14-0 after the first 15 minutes.
Chris Baer put Trinity up 21-0 five minutes into the second quarter with a five yard run, and Thompson's second score of the game gave Trinity a 28-0 led moments before the half.
Trinity's first offensive possession in the second half resulted in a ten play drive culminated by a Jonathan Plotnick one yard touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Nigel Robinson put the home Tigers up 42-0 with an 11 yard touchdown from Bryant Wilson.
Sewanee would get on the board with four minute, ten play, 70 yard drive as Patrick Shelton escaped pressure and found Bruce Bentley for a 28 yard score.
Shelton completed 26 of 34 passes for 178 yards, while Barmore was 20-28 for 220 yards and three touchdowns. Coleman led the way with seven receptions for Trinity, amassing 127 yards. Thompson finished with five for 66 yards.
Trinity gained 461 yards of total offense and the defense limited Sewanee to 218 and just 40 on the ground.
Charles Lapeyre had 13 total tackles for Sewanee while Philip Kownslar led Trinity with nine. Trinity's Dylan Nealous had eight total tackles, five solo, and two sacks.
Trinity travels to SCAC defending champion Millsaps next week in Jackson, Mississippi. The Tigers will be looking to climb back into a tie for the SCAC lead as the Majors are currently 5-0 in conference play. |
