Game Notes - Jan. 30

Trinity Men's Basketball @ DePauw

The Tiger men’s basketball team has moved up to the eighth spot in the latest D3hoops.com national rankings, following a conference weekend sweep against Sewanee and Oglethorpe on Friday and Sunday. The wins extend the team's winning streak to 15 games.

Trinity opened the weekend with a 55-40 win over Sewanee on Friday, shaking off a slow start to and cruising to victory.  B.J. Moon led the team with 16 points, while Dwight Lutz tied his career high with 15 points off the bench.

On Sunday against Oglethorpe, the Tigers erased a 12-point first-half deficit on its way to a narrow 77-74 win.  Trinity had a blocked shot and two turnovers in the final seconds of the game, sealing the victory despite nearly 60% shooting from Oglethorpe.  Lutz set a new career high with 17 points – hitting five three-pointers – but it was a 10-18 shooting performance that led to a game-high 21 points from Luke Caldarera.  He also led the team with eight rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a pair of blocks.

Charles Houston now has 52 steals on the season and is only the second player in school history to record 50 or more in two separate years.  With six more steals this season, Houston will break his own record of 57, set in 2006-07.  He is also four steals from cracking the top 10 in SCAC history.

The Tigers hit the road this weekend, taking on DePauw and Centre on Friday and Saturday night.  Trinity was swept at home by the two teams last year, then also played both teams in the SCAC Tournament.  The Tigers played an overtime game against each team last year.

In the regular season meeting with DePauw, Trinity had two chances at game-winning shots, but lost a 70-68 game in San Antonio.  In the opening round of the SCAC Tournament, Trinity was able to exact revenge, though, winning an 82-77 overtime game.  Trinity’s Nick Polidoroff blocked a three-pointer with only seconds left to send the game into overtime, and B.J. Moon’s free throws in the final seconds of overtime sealed the win.
