Memphis, Tennessee -
Trinity's men's basketball team scored a last-second layup to slip past
Oglethorpe University 50-49 in the first round of the SCAC Championships
Tournament.
Tiger senior Brandon York scored a game-winning
layup with 1.5 seconds remaining to propel Trinity to the SCAC
Semifinals. York also pulled down a crucial offensive rebound to
give the Tigers another chance to go ahead, and then got the call to
take that shot.
Trinity (15-11) trailed 23-24 at halftime after
both teams shot below 30% from the field. The Tigers held
Oglethorpe to just five total field goals, though Trinity's offense
managed just seven. Each team improved in the second half, but
neither shot better than 33% for the game.
Charles Houston added nine points for Trinity,
while Mike Gilb chipped in with eight. Houston also grabbed five
rebounds and was limited to just 15 minutes due to foul trouble.
Casey Hill added 10 rebounds to go with five points and three rebounds.
Arthur Pilkevich led all scorers with 18 points
for the Petrels, hitting 6-9 from the field and adding seven rebounds.
Andrew Tulowitzky, who took the game's final shot, scored 12 points.
Tulowitzky took a last-second pass from Ahmad
Kareem Shaheed, and tried to put up a game-winning shot at the buzzer,
but the ball fell short of the rim.
The Tigers opened up the game with a 19-8 run to
take an early lead over Oglethorpe, but a 14-2 run by the Petrels closed
out the half and gave them a lead at halftime. Trinity took an
early eight-point lead in the second half, but Oglethorpe tied the game
with 7:13 to play.
Trinity will take on top seed DePauw University
tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in the SCAC Semifinals. DePauw
defeated Sewanee 84-72 earlier in the evening. Other winners were
Centre and Millsaps, who will play in the other semifinal.
