San Antonio -
Trinity's men's basketball team earned a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference weekend split with a 64-48 win over Austin College in the
final regular season game of the year on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (14-11, 8-6) led 40-21 at halftime and
never really looked back against the Kangaroos. The Tigers jumped
out to a 16-4 advantage in the first five minutes of play and hit 55.6%
from the floor in the first half. Austin shot 50%, but made just
nine field goals.
In the second half, the Tiger defense stiffened
even more, allowing just five field goals and 18.5% shooting.
Offensively, Trinity cooled off in the final period, but still shot over
40% for the game.
Mike Gilb scored 16 points to lead Trinity to the
win, hitting all six of his field goal attempts and adding six rebounds
and two steals.
Brandon York added 10 points and five steals,
while Charles Houston chipped in with eight points and led the team with
nine rebounds. Nick Polidoroff also had eight points off the bench
for Trinity.
Jason Burton and Adam Bishop both had 12 points to
lead the Kangaroos, while Kyle May scored nine points. Austin also
recorded 27 turnovers and was out-rebounded 38-44 in the game.
With the win and a loss by Oglethorpe, Trinity
will be the No. 4 seed in next weekend's SCAC Championship Tournament at
Rhodes College. The Tigers will face Oglethorpe in the first round
of the tournament.
