San Antonio -
Trinity's men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak
snapped in a 54-66 loss to Division III's second-ranked Amherst College.
Trinity (6-6) trailed 25-30 at the half as both
teams shot less than 40% in the first half. Amherst was held to
just 4-13 shooting from beyond the arc in the period, but nailed 6-12 in
the second half to pull off the victory.
The Tigers hung with the No. 2 Lord Jeffs until
the final few minutes when the visitors went on an 11-2 run to pull
ahead. Trinity missed two shots with the score 45-49 in favor of
Amherst, followed by the the clutch run that took 2:41 and put Amherst
ahead 60-47 with 5:05 remaining.
Trinity cut the deficit to eight points with just
over three minutes left, but Amherst held on by scoring six of the final
eight points.
Amherst's Brian Baskauskas led all scorers with 22
points on 8-10 shooting and 5-6 three-pointers, while point guard Andrew
Olson finished with 15 points on 6-11 shooting - including 3-5 from
distance - and four assists.
Trinity's Charles Houston had a double-double with
10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while B.J. Moon led the team with
13 points. Brandon York added nine points off the bench for the
Tigers.
The Tigers hit 11-11 from the free throw line -
easily the team's best performance from the charity stripe this season.
Trinity did only hit 5-21 three-pointers, though, and shot less than 40%
from the field for the game.
Trinity hits the road next week to continue
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play against Hendrix and Austin
College. The Tigers return home to face Southwestern on January
13.
