San Antonio -
Trinity's men's basketball team fell just short in its bid for a weekend
sweep in SCAC play, falling 75-81 to Oglethorpe University on Saturday
night.
Trinity (9-10, 4-5) held a slight 37-36 advantage
at halftime, as both teams shot 14-32 (43.8%) from the floor. The
Tigers cooled off a bit after halftime - and Oglethorpe didn't - but the
biggest difference was the 17-19 performance at the foul line for the
Petrels. Oglethorpe hit 20-23 overall from the charity stripe,
compared to 12-16 for Trinity.
The Tigers had a slim five-point lead early in the
first half, but neither team could pull away early on. The two
teams were tied five times in the first 20 minutes, and Trinity's
three-point bucket with 17 seconds left gave them the lead at the break.
Trinity led by as many as eight points in the
second half, but Oglethorpe used a 7-1 run midway through the period to
cut the lead to just two (55-53) with 10:14 to play. The Petrels
tied the game at 62-62 with just over seven minutes remaining, and would
never trail again. Oglethorpe hit 10-10 from the foul line in the
final 2:23 to seal the win.
The loss squanders a career night from Tiger guard
B.J. Moon, who led all scorers with 28 points in the game. Moon
hit 11-14 overall field goals, including a scorching 6-8 from
three-point range. The 28 points was not only a career high for
the sophomore, but was also the highest by a Tiger player this season.
Charles Houston was the only other Trinity player
in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing a team-high seven
boards. Brandon York added eight points to go with five rebounds
and four steals, while Nick Polidoroff chipped in with seven points in
just nine minutes of action.
Eric Dickinson led Oglethorpe with 20 points,
while Ahmad Kareem Shaheed turned in 17 points and 12 rebounds for the
Petrels - knocking down 7-8 from the field and 3-4 from the line.
Andrew Tulowitsky added 14 points, while Arthur Pilkevich chipped in
with 13 points.
Trinity will hit the road for its next four games,
playing at Rhodes and Millsaps next weekend, followed by back-to-back
games at Southwestern and the University of Dallas.
