Trinity's men's basketball team evened its Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference record with a 92-78 victory over Sewanee on Friday night.
Trinity (9-9, 4-4) led 39-23 at the half, holding
Sewanee to just five total field goals in the period, and hitting 44% of
its shots.
Both teams came out on fire in the second half,
though, scoring over 100 combined points in the final 20 minutes.
Sewanee hit 19-32 (59.4%) from the field, but the hometown Trinity
Tigers shot a blistering 76% (19-25) in the second half - including
hitting its final nine shots.
Trinity took its 16-point halftime lead up to as
much as a 20-point lead in the second half, but Sewanee mounted a
comeback with a 22-9 run over a 5:51 span. A few minutes later the
lead was down to five points (64-59), but Trinity scored five unanswered
to push it back to double digits with 6:53 to play. The TU Tigers
didn't allow Sewanee any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Brandon York led Trinity with 19 points, hitting
6-11 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line. York added
two rebounds and two assists.
Charles Houston scored 15 points for Trinity, as
well as collecting six boards and a team-best five assists - despite
playing just 22 minutes due to foul trouble early in the second half.
Casey Hill added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, hitting 5-9
field goals and 2-3 three-point shots.
Spencer Rowland led Sewanee with 20 points, while
Ben Pursell finished with 17 points and four rebounds. Chris Eddy
added seven points and five assists, while Gary Grizzle hit 3-3
three-pointers on his way to 12 points for the visitors.
Mike Gilb chipped in with nine points and six
rebounds for the TU Tigers, while B.J. Moon had eight points and four
assists.
Trinity will host Oglethorpe tomorrow night to
finish off the SCAC weekend. The Tigers will travel to Rhodes and
Millsaps next weekend, beginning a four-game stretch of road games over
the next three weekends.
