San Antonio -
Trinity's men's basketball team scored a 62-53 Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference win over Southwestern University on Saturday night.
Trinity (8-7, 3-2) led 31-22 at the half, and led
by as many as 13 points in the opening minutes of the second period.
Southwestern, though, would not go down without a fight.
The close game was no surprise in this SCAC
series. Including tonight's game, 17 of the past 20 meetings in
this series have been decided by less than 10 points. Trinity now
leads the series with a 26-10 record since the 1984-85 season.
With the Tigers leading 37-24, Southwestern made
its best run of the night (15-3) to cut the lead to just one point with
11:02 remaining. Trinity answered back, though, scoring nine
unanswered points to push the lead back to double digits. The
Pirates got to within seven a couple of minutes later, but the visitors
would get no closer in this one.
Charles Houston had an outstanding game for
Trinity, leading all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Houston also had three steals and connected on 8-12 from the field.
He hit 9-13 from the foul line as well, including 5-6 from the line in
the final two minutes.
B.J. Moon and Jonathan Lewis chipped in with eight
points each for the Tigers, and Lewis also grabbed five rebounds in the
game.
Matt Caplan led Southwestern with 12 points and
seven boards, while Ben Schleif added 11 points off the bench for the
Pirates. Casey Gorder finished with eight points and seven
rebounds.
Trinity will travel to DePauw and Centre next
weekend for two key SCAC games. The games will be part of two
doubleheaders with the women's team and will start at 8:00 p.m.
