Trinity's men's basketball team lost its first game of the season on
Monday night, falling 49-56 loss to Carthage College at the
Southwestern/Trinity Finals Classic.
Trinity (6-1) trailed 20-22 at the half, then fell
behind by as many as 14 points in the second period. Carthage
opened up with a 9-2 advantage early on, then led 16-10 with just over
8:00 left until halftime. The Tigers were able to cut into that
lead, tying the game at 20-20 with 1:41 to go in the first period.
Carthage used a 10-1 run in the early part of the
second half to take a 36-26 lead with 13:53 remaining, and after the
Tigers cut it to seven, Carthage scored seven unanswered to push it to a
14-point advantage with 5:28 remaining.
Trinity had the lead down to six with 2:24 to
play, but the team could get no closer. Neither team shot above
40% in either half, and the Tigers were hurt once again by a poor
shooting performance at the foul line. Trinity hit just 8-19 from
the free throw line, as well as just 5-18 three-point attempts.
B.J. Moon led the team with 12 points, hitting 4-8
three-pointers in his 30 minutes of play. Nick Polidoroff added
eight points and three rebounds off the bench.
Charles Houston finished with five points and six
boards, while Jonathan Lewis and Mike Gilb also collected six rebounds.
Steve Djurickovic led Carthage with 19 points,
while Trey Bowens added 13 points.
Trinity faces California State University-East Bay
tomorrow to conclude the tournament.
