- Trinity's men's basketball team overcame a sluggish first half to
defeat Southwestern University 68-52 in Saturday evening Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
Trinity (11-2, 4-1) led 29-23 at the half, and
neither team shot better than 33.3% from the field. The Tigers
opened things up in the second, hitting 46.4% (13-28) from the floor,
and holding Southwestern to just 33.3% shooting. Southwestern was
also held to just six baskets in the second half. After
Southwestern opened the game by hitting 6-10 from the field, the team
connected on just one of its next 17 attempts.
Trinity turned a three-point deficit (12-15) into
a 22-16 advantage midway through the first half, then held Southwestern
without a field goal for the final 6:26 of the first period. The
streak continued into the second half, totaling nearly 15 minutes
without a field goal made. Southwestern hit some free throws, but
it wasn't until a three-pointer with 11:44 left in the game that the
drought was finished.
That three brought the lead back to 20 points,
though, as Trinity outscored Southwestern 25-7 during that stretch of
time.
Patrick Robinson led the team in scoring for the
fifth straight game, totaling 13 points on 5-7 shooting overall.
Robinson played in just 21 minutes, also grabbing a pair of rebounds for
the Tigers.
Jonathan Lewis finished with a career-high 11 points and
five blocks, as well as a four rebounds in the game. Nick Polidoroff came off the bench with seven points and seven rebounds in 14
minutes, while Luke Caldarera finished with eight points in 12 minutes.
Mike Powell led Southwestern with 12 points on
5-10 shooting, and was the only player in double figures. Ross
Hayes led all players with eight rebounds for the visitors.
