San Antonio -
Trinity's men's basketball team held off a late rally by Texas Lutheran
University on Tuesday night, scoring a narrow 67-65 victory.
Trinity (3-0) trailed 24-27 at halftime, and both
teams struggled to score points early in the game. Texas Lutheran
led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but the Tigers refused to
go away.
In the second half, Trinity used a 14-2 run to
open up the biggest lead of the night at 48-36 with 11:05 to play.
This time it was the visitors who wouldn't quit, working their way back
into the game.
Trinity shot just 52.9% (18-34) from the line in
the game, which hurt them most in the final minutes. With 4.3
seconds left, Trinity had a pair of free throw shots that could have
iced the win, but after two misses, Texas Lutheran was able to get the
rebound and a timeout. Trinity then called a timeout to set the
defense, and Texas Lutheran got off a desperation shot for the tie, but
it drew air at the buzzer.
Mike Gilb led Trinity with a double-double,
collecting 13 points and 10 rebounds - six of which came on the
offensive glass. Gilb hit 4-8 shots and 5-8 free throws for the
Tigers.
B.J. Moon and Charles Houston both chipped in with
11 points, while Houston also added four steals and nine boards.
Jonathan Lewis finished with nine points and four rebounds, while Bart
Taylor came off the bench to add 10 points in just 17 minutes, hitting
2-4 three-point shots.
Luke Calderara added five points and nine rebounds
off the bench, while Barrett Koch had five points and a team-high three
assists.
Texas Lutheran's Nate Walton led all players with
14 points, while both Josh Scott and Terrance Pierson added 13 points
each.
Trinity will be back at home on Monday, November
26, facing Hardin-Simmons University. The Tigers will then open
SCAC play later that week.
