Tiger Men's Hoops Opens Season With Win Over Schreiner

San Antonio - Trinity's men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a 77-66 win over Schreiner University at the Trinity/Southwestern Tip-Off Classic on Friday night.

Trinity (1-0) opened up a 44-23 lead by halftime, hitting over 40% from the field and holding Schreiner to just 27.6% shooting.  The Tigers also hit 6-14 from three-point range, while Schreiner managed just 1-12 from long-distance.

The Tigers opened up with a 15-5 run and never trailed in the game.  After the initial burst by Trinity, Schreiner never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.

Schreiner never quit, using a 12-0 run late in the second half to cut a 22-point lead down to just 10 points against the Tigers.  The Mountaineers missed their final seven shots, though, and Trinity finished off the victory.

Trinity was led by a solid double-double from senior Charles Houston.  Houston, the reigning SCAC Defensive Player of the Year, had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the game, as well as grabbing five steals in his 21 minutes of action.

Luke Caldarera came off the bench with 13 points on 6-9 shooting, while B.J. Moon finished with 10 points and four assists.  Nick Polidoroff and Jonathan Lewis finished with eight points each, and the duo combined for 15 boards as well.

Trinity will take on sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in tomorrow's action, finishing off the weekend tournament.
