- Trinity's men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a
77-66 win over Schreiner University at the Trinity/Southwestern Tip-Off
Classic on Friday night.
Trinity (1-0) opened up a 44-23 lead by halftime,
hitting over 40% from the field and holding Schreiner to just 27.6%
shooting. The Tigers also hit 6-14 from three-point range, while
Schreiner managed just 1-12 from long-distance.
The Tigers opened up with a 15-5 run and never
trailed in the game. After the initial burst by Trinity, Schreiner
never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.
Schreiner never quit, using a 12-0 run late in the
second half to cut a 22-point lead down to just 10 points against the
Tigers. The Mountaineers missed their final seven shots, though,
and Trinity finished off the victory.
Trinity was led by a solid double-double from
senior Charles Houston. Houston, the reigning SCAC Defensive
Player of the Year, had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the game, as well
as grabbing five steals in his 21 minutes of action.
Luke Caldarera came off the bench with 13 points
on 6-9 shooting, while B.J. Moon finished with 10 points and four
assists. Nick Polidoroff and Jonathan Lewis finished with eight
points each, and the duo combined for 15 boards as well.
Trinity will take on sixth-ranked University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point in tomorrow's action, finishing off the weekend
tournament. |
