San Antonio -
Trinity's men's soccer team defeated Principia (IL) College by a final
of 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA playoffs on Saturday night.
Trinity (20-0) has now reached
20 wins for just the third time in school history. The Tigers were
20-1-2 in the 2002 season, as well as 24-0-0 when they won the NCAA
Division III National Championship in 2003.
In tonight's game, Trinity
jumped out to an early lead on a goal by German Gomez in the fifth
minute. Gomez scored on a header from a pass off the foot of
Robert C'deBaca.
The game remained tied through
halftime, but the Tigers scored just 19 seconds into the second period
on another header - this time from Patrick Floeck. Floeck knocked
in his 18th goal of the year on an assist from Gomez and Noe Casanova.
It was the 10th assist of the season for Casanova, tying C'deBaca for
second on the team.
Kyle Altman made it 3-0 just
over two minutes later, assisted by Michael Robertson, and C'deBaca
finished off the scoring with a nice unassisted goal from about 35 yards
out. That goal gave Trinity full command of the game with over 40
minutes still to be played.
The Tiger defense didn't allow
a shot until late in the game, and out-shot the Panthers 23-4 overall.
Trinity will advance to the
NCAA Sectionals at a site to be determined next weekend, facing off
against an opponent to be determined.
