Tigers Down Bears in Battle of Ranked Teams

San Antonio - Trinity's top-ranked men's soccer team defeated No. 11 Washington (MO) University 1-0 on Saturday night.

Trinity (6-0-0) and Washington were tied at the half, but the Tigers scored less than two minutes after intermission for the eventual game-winner.

Both teams had chances to score more, but both goalkeepers were up to the task.  Trinity's David Steinberg had four saves - including three in the second half - to preserve his first solo shutout of the season. Washington's GK John Smelcer had 10 saves on the night, and the team also recorded save.

Noe Casanova scored the eventual game-winner just 1:23 into the second period, assisted by Tyrone Petrakis.  It was the third goal of the weekend for Casanova, who netted a pair of goals in last night's win over regionally-ranked Methodist University.

Trinity out-shot Washington 25-10 in the game, and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers will hit the road for its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference openers against Millsaps and new SCAC member Birmingham-Southern College.
