The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor upset the fifth-ranked Trinity
Tigers men's soccer team 2-1 in a season-opening game on Tuesday night.
It marked the
first time since 1998 the Tigers suffered an opening-game loss. Trinity
also had a 52-game regular-season winning streak going, dating back to
2006. The last time the Tigers lost a regular-season contest at home was
Oct. 12, 2001, when the University of Mobile edged Trinity 2-1.
The Cru (1-0-0)
struck early on Tuesday as senior defender Daniel Green scored at 8:28,
off a corner header junior midfielder Daniel Gable. Mary Hardin-Baylor
maintained the lead for the half.
In the 76th
minute, Mary Hardin-Baylor took a 2-0 lead as junior midfielder Bo Baker
scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Kyle Dickey.
The Tigers, always
in the hunt, fought back as senior forward Ben Grossman put the ball
past the net at 86:03. Junior midfielder Eddie Bilbao provided the
assist.
But The Cru held
on for the final four minutes as Trinity dropped to 0-1-0.
Tiger senior
goalkeeper Patrick Johnson allowed two goals and made one save. UMHB
junior keeper Mark Miller gave up one goal and recorded five saves.
Trinity led 25-7
in shots, with a 6-3 edge in shots-on-goal. The Tigers also picked up 11
corner kicks, to three for Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The Tigers travel
to Georgetown, Texas – and Southwestern University – for two games
Friday and Saturday. Trinity takes on Texas Lutheran Friday and UT-Tyler
Saturday. Each game will begin at 3 p.m.
