Trinity Upset by Mary Hardin-Baylor in Season Opener

San Antonio - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor upset the fifth-ranked Trinity Tigers men's soccer team 2-1 in a season-opening game on Tuesday night.

It marked the first time since 1998 the Tigers suffered an opening-game loss. Trinity also had a 52-game regular-season winning streak going, dating back to 2006. The last time the Tigers lost a regular-season contest at home was Oct. 12, 2001, when the University of Mobile edged Trinity 2-1.

The Cru (1-0-0) struck early on Tuesday as senior defender Daniel Green scored at 8:28, off a corner header junior midfielder Daniel Gable. Mary Hardin-Baylor maintained the lead for the half.

In the 76th minute, Mary Hardin-Baylor took a 2-0 lead as junior midfielder Bo Baker scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Kyle Dickey.

The Tigers, always in the hunt, fought back as senior forward Ben Grossman put the ball past the net at 86:03. Junior midfielder Eddie Bilbao provided the assist.

But The Cru held on for the final four minutes as Trinity dropped to 0-1-0.

Tiger senior goalkeeper Patrick Johnson allowed two goals and made one save. UMHB junior keeper Mark Miller gave up one goal and recorded five saves.

Trinity led 25-7 in shots, with a 6-3 edge in shots-on-goal. The Tigers also picked up 11 corner kicks, to three for Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Tigers travel to Georgetown, Texas – and Southwestern University – for two games Friday and Saturday. Trinity takes on Texas Lutheran Friday and UT-Tyler Saturday. Each game will begin at 3 p.m.
