In a rematch of the 2008 NCAA
Division III playoffs, the fifth-ranked Trinity Tigers beat the UT-Tyler
Patriots 3-2 Saturday at Southwestern University.
The Tigers (2-1-0)
had defeated the Patriots 2-0 in San Antonio during the NCAA second
round.
Trinity sophomore
midfielder Josh Adams scored two goals on Saturday, both in the first
half, and minutes apart. Adams’ first goal came in the 14th minute, with
an assist from sophomore midfielder Nima Naderi. His second goal,
unassisted, was halfway through the 18th minute. Adams made four shots,
all on goal. The Patriots Edward Anaya closed the score to 1-2, with a
goal in the 32nd minute.
Tiger senior
forward Ben Grossman widened the lead to 3-1, 1 minute, 55 seconds into
the second half with a solo shot. Grossman, the Tigers’ leading scorer
this season, produced his third goal in as many games. Justin NeSmith of
UT-Tyler scored the final goal of the contest, in the 78th minute.
Trinity senior
goalkeeper Patrick Johnson registered three saves.
The Tigers led
11-6 in shots and held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Trinity had
UT-Tyler each had three corner kicks.
Trinity travels to
Abilene, Texas, for a Friday, Sept. 11 game at 3 p.m. with
Hardin-Simmons. |
