Richardson, Texas -
Trinity's men's soccer team, ranked No. 1 in the latest NSCAA Division
III poll, handed Hardin-Simmons University a 7-0 defeat on Saturday
night at the University of Texas-Dallas.
Trinity (4-0) outscored
opponents 12-0 over the weekend to remain unbeaten in the early season.
The Tigers led 4-0 at the half, though the team nearly lost the shutout
twice in the early going.
In the opening moments,
Hardin-Simmons had a goal disallowed because the player was off-sides.
In the 19th minute, Trinity opened the scoring with a Robert C'deBaca
goal from Kyle Altman.
Just over three minutes later,
the Cowboys had a chance to tie the game with a penalty kick that was a
result of a hand ball in the Trinity box. Senior goalkeeper and
co-captain David Steinberg was up to the task, though, recording the
save on the PK.
From there, Trinity went on a
scoring blitz, adding three more goals by the 37th minute of the game.
Goals five and six were in the back of the net less than 10 minutes into
the second half, and the Tigers added a final goal in the 87th minute.
German Gomez scored a pair of
goals in the game, netting one in each period. Altman also scored
a goal to go with his assist on the game-winner to C'deBaca.
Matt Beham scored his second
goal in as many games, and Ben Stewart - who had three assists in
yesterday's win - hit a 51st-minute goal on a header, assisted by
Michael Hicks.
Tommy Barros, who assisted
Cameron Hogsett on his first collegiate goal last night, scored the
first goal of his career on an assist from Andres Aceves. Hogsett
was also credited with an assist on Beham's goal.
Trinity returns home for two
tough games next weekend, facing off against regionally-ranked Methodist
and nationally-ranked Washington-St. Louis.
