Head Coach Paul McGinlay
Paul McGinlay is in his 18th
season at the helm of the Trinity University Tigers men’s soccer
team. He has amassed an overall record of 283-54-19 (.822) over the
past 17 years.
Coach McGinlay ranks No. 2 in winning
percentage and victories among active NCAA Division III coaches. The
leader is Dave Brandt of Messiah College, which Trinity beat in the
2007 NCAA Division III semifinals. The Tigers went on to their
second NCAA Championship game. Coach McGinlay also ranks sixth in
winning percentage in all NCAA divisions.
Coach McGinlay led Trinity to a 24-0-0
record and the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2003. It
was the first NCAA title – in any division – for a soccer team in
the state of Texas.
Trinity was also in the NCAA semifinals
in 2002, finishing 20-1-2 for the year, and reaching 20 wins for the
first time in school history.
Coach McGinlay had led the Tigers to 11
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships (1993,
1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007) and
11 appearances in the NCAA playoffs, including six in a row. He is a
nine-time SCAC Coach of the Year honoree and guided the Tigers to an
undefeated conference schedule nine times in his career. Coach
McGinlay has also been selected as National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) South Central Region Coach of the
Year five times, including 2007.
His teams have produced 15 All-Americans
over the past 11 years.
During the summer of 2000, coach
McGinlay was the head boys coach of the United States Soccer
Federation’s (USSF) Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He
was responsible for selecting the top aged 14-through-18 players in
an 11-state region. The players competed against other regional
squads and had the chance for selection to national teams. Coach
McGinlay is also an assistant national staff coach for the NSCAA and
is assistant director for the Region III Boys ODP.
Coach McGinlay joined the Trinity staff
in 1991 from the College of Wooster (Ohio) where he was the
assistant men’s soccer coach for four seasons. While coach McGinlay
was at Wooster, the Scots captured two North Coast Athletic
Conference titles and made two trips to the NCAA Division III
postseason tournament.
Coach McGinlay holds a USFF “A” license
and an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA.
A native of Corby, England, coach
McGinlay earned the bachelor’s degree from the University of
London.
Coach McGinlay resides in San Antonio with his wife Whitney and a
daughter (Claire, age 6) and son (Dylan, age 4).

Assistant Coach Kelly Altman
Kelly Altman is in his second
season as an assistant coach for the Tigers soccer program. Coach
Altman joined the Trinity men’s coaching staff in the fall of 2007
after receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity in communication.
A defender for the Tigers from
2001 to 2004, he was a member of Trinity’s NCAA National Championship
team in 2003. A team captain in 2004, coach Altman contributed to the
success of a squad which amassed an overall record of 79-5-2 and set an
all division’s record of 43 consecutive wins.
With his collegiate soccer
career complete, coach Altman maximized his final year of athletic
eligibility in 2005, as a kicker on the Tigers football team. An all-SCAC
and all-South Region honoree, he was named the SCAC Special Teams Player
of the Year.
Along with his coaching duties
at Trinity, coach Altman is the head varsity coach at San Antonio’s
Central Catholic High School. Coach Altman led the Buttons to a 22-1-1
overall record, a No. 1 area ranking by the San Antonio Express-News
and a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state
title in 2008.
A native of Albuquerque, N.M.
