Fredericksburg, Virginia - The top-seeded Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division III regional final with a 5-0 second-round shutout of No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) Saturday at the University of Mary Washington.

Trinity (20-6), ranked No. 4 nationally, will face second-seeded and 13th-ranked Mary Washington in the third round at noon Eastern (11 a.m. Central) Sunday. The winner advances to the NCAA quarterfinals May 13 at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Mary Washington edged third-seeded and 18th-ranked Washington and Lee 5-4 in Saturday’s other match.

The Tigers, who had a first-round bye, won all three doubles matches against Stevens Institute. Trinity first-year player Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake (Carroll) then beat Jay Lee 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The match was clinched at No. 3 singles as senior David Tran of Houston (Cypress Falls) defeated Piotr Rusinkiewicz 6-1, 6-0.  Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles matches were not completed.

Cocanougher and doubles partner Cory Kowal improved to 20-3 as a team this year, leading the team in both wins and winning percentage in doubles.  Singles victory leaders James Furr (18-4 overall) and Crisanto Ramirez (18-6 in singles) were not able to finish their respective matches.  Both players had won the first set before the match was called.
