The top-seeded Trinity
Tigers men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division III regional
final with a 5-0 second-round shutout of No. 4 Stevens Institute of
Technology (N.J.) Saturday at the University of Mary Washington.
Trinity (20-6), ranked No. 4
nationally, will face second-seeded and 13th-ranked Mary
Washington in the third round at noon Eastern (11 a.m. Central)
Sunday. The winner advances to the NCAA quarterfinals May 13 at
Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Mary Washington edged third-seeded
and 18th-ranked Washington and Lee 5-4 in Saturday’s
other match.
The Tigers, who had a first-round bye,
won all three doubles matches against Stevens Institute. Trinity
first-year player Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake (Carroll) then beat
Jay Lee 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The match was clinched at No. 3
singles as senior David Tran of Houston (Cypress Falls) defeated
Piotr Rusinkiewicz 6-1, 6-0. Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles
matches were not completed.
Cocanougher and doubles
partner Cory Kowal improved to 20-3 as a team this year, leading the
team in both wins and winning percentage in doubles. Singles
victory leaders James Furr (18-4 overall) and Crisanto Ramirez (18-6
in singles) were not able to finish their respective matches.
Both players had won the first set before the match was called.
