Carla Spenkoch
Carla Spenkoch is in her 10th
year as the Trinity University Tigers head golf coach.
Coach Spenkoch took the 2003
Tiger team to the NCAA Division III Championships. It marked Trinity’s
first NCAA invitation since 1975 and the Tigers came in at 18th
place. Simon Thompson finished 15th individually to earn
Third Team All-America honors. Brian Sparks became an Honorable Mention
All-American
She led the Tigers to six
top-five finishes at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championships, including the 2005 team title. Trinity finished as
runner-up in 2002. Nine of Coach Spenkoch’s players have received All-SCAC
recognition.
Golf Digest, one of the
sport’s leading publications, recognized the Tigers in the top-five
nationally in its 2006 collegiate “academic first” rankings. Trinity
(84.597 points) was ranked No. 2 in the nation, right behind Princeton
(85.290). The Tigers were immediately ahead of Yale, Linfield (Ore.) and
Pennsylvania. In the “golf first rankings,” Trinity was rated ninth with
65.445 points.
Coach Spenkoch is also a highly
respected teaching professional at the Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio.
Before joining the staff at the Quarry, she was employed in the same
capacity by Precision Golf Center, also in San Antonio. She was named
as one of the Top Texas Women Instructors by Texas Golf for
Women magazine, honoring the 20 most qualified teachers in the
state.
Coach Spenkoch graduated from
the University of Texas at Austin in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in
physical education. She served as captain for the Lady Longhorn golf
team during the 1975 and 1976 seasons and was voted the team's most
valuable athlete in 1976.
She is a Life Member of the
Ladies Professional Golf Association Teaching and Club Division. She
also captured the Austin City Women's Amateur Championship in 1976. |
