San Antonio -
Trinity's men's and women's tennis teams will have seven total
players representing the school at the NCAA Singles and Doubles
National Championships May 16-18.
The men's tournaments will
take place at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine; and the women's
championships will be at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter,
Minnesota.
Senior Alicia Hunt was
selected to compete in her fourth straight NCAA Singles
Championship. Hunt also won the ITA South Region doubles title
in the fall of 2005, and will team up with junior Laura Steinmetz
for this year's doubles tournament. Hunt and Steinmetz are
seeded fourth at the 16-draw doubles championship tournament.
Hunt and Steinmetz,
Trinity's top doubles team, are 13-4 in doubles this season.
The doubles duo won last fall's ITA Southwest Regional doubles title
to advance to the National Small College Championships. The
pair of Tiger standouts made it all the way to the doubles final
before losing.
In singles play, Hunt scored
nine wins in singles as Trinity's No. 1 player, and won the regional
singles title last October. She advanced to the semifinals
before being eliminated in the tournament.
Seniors Oliver Gaines and
James Furr both made the singles competition for the men's
tournament, while Gaines and doubles partner Ryan DeSantis were
chosen for the doubles championships.
Gaines holds a 13-11 record
as the team's No. 1 singles player this season, and also won last
fall's ITA regional singles crown. DeSantis and Gaines are
17-9 in doubles this season, also at the No. 1 spot in the Tiger
lineup.
James Furr comes in with an
18-5 record in singles play this season, as well as a career singles
record of 49-15 for the Tigers.
Both Trinity tennis teams
are led by Head Coach Butch Newman. Newman is in his 22nd
season as the Tiger men's tennis coach, and in his 17th season
leading both the men's and women's teams. He is assisted by
former Tiger players Ryan Takao (women's assistant coach) and
Russell McMindes (men's assistant). Both teams advanced to the
SCAC Championship match this season, but were beaten by DePauw.
The Tiger teams also advanced to the postseason, but were eliminated
at regionals last weekend.
