Trinity University Tigers
assistant men’s tennis coach Russell McMindes has been voted the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III West Region
Assistant Coach of the Year.
Coach McMindes
is now eligible for selection as the ITA National Assistant Coach of
the Year.
Butch Newman,
in his 23rd as head coach of the Tigers, expressed high
praise for his assistant.
“Russell
McMindes has been the men’s assistant coach at Trinity University
for seven years,” coach Newman said. “Each year, he brings more
enthusiasm, more commitment and more experience to the players that
he so excitedly imparts.”
Coach McMindes
earned the Bachelor of Science in engineering science from Trinity
in 2002. He was a three-year letter winner for the Tigers, and was a
member of Trinity’s 2000 NCAA Division III Championship team. The
Clemens High School (Schertz, Texas) graduate was the valedictorian
of his class in 1997. Coach McMindes has also been a teaching
professional at the San Antonio Country Club.
The Tigers
completed the dual-match season with a 13-8 record, and are ranked
No. 15 in the nation by the ITA. First-year player Max Frey will
represent Trinity at the NCAA Championships singles tournament May
22-24 at Claremont, Calif. Sophomores Bobby Cocanougher and Cory
Kowal will compete in the NCAA doubles event.
