San Antonio -
The Trinity University
Tigers sophomore doubles team of Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake,
Texas; and Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson); advanced to the
NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships doubles quarterfinals
Friday.
The Tiger duo
came from behind to defeat Andrew Thompson and David Farah of
Middlebury College 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at Biszantz Family Tennis
Center. Cocanougher and Kowal, who became All-Americans last fall by
winning the ITA regional doubles crown, were on the ropes in the
second set as the Middlebury team was serving for the match.
Cocanougher
and Kowal will take on top seeds Mike Burdakin and John Kauss of
Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday in the quarters.
Earlier, Kauss,
the No. 1 seed in singles, beat Trinity first-year player Max Frey
of Broken Arrow, Okla. (Tulsa Holland Hall), 6-2, 6-1 in the opening
round.
Frey captured
Southwest Region singles title last fall in San Antonio, and earned
All-America honors. He went on to the National Small College
Championships at Mobile, Ala. Frey was also elected the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Player of the Year.
Trinity is led
by Butch Newman, in his 23rd year at the Tigers helm.
