Richardson, Texas – Trinity University first-year player Erick
DelaFuente won the singles title Monday at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association Southwest Region Division III Men’s Tennis Championships at
the University of Texas-Dallas.
DelaFuente captured a default victory over Tiger sophomore teammate Max
Frey, the defending champion. He will represent Trinity at the ITA
National Small College Championships October 15-18 at Mobile, Alabama.
The
two-time defending champion Trinity doubles team of juniors Bobby
Cocanougher and Cory Kowal lost in the finals. Brad Fenter and Nick
Krienes of UT-Tyler beat the Tiger duo 4-6, 6-4, 11-9, with a tiebreak
being played instead of a third set.
On
Sunday, the Tigers had three of four entries advance to Monday’s
finals. Frey beat Cocanougher and DelaFuente defeated Kowal in singles,
while Cocanougher and Kowal beat David Ashlock and Andrew Reznik of
UT-Tyler in the doubles semifinals. Frey and DelaFuente lost by default
to Fenter and Krienes.
Russell
McMindes, the Tigers’ first-year head coach, was thrilled over his
players’ performances over the weekend. “It was a strong tournament for
the Tigers,” Coach McMindes said. “We had a lot of upside this weekend.
I’m looking forward to the spring season. We’ll be tough to beat.” |
