San Antonio -
Four members of the
Trinity University Tigers men’s and women’s tennis teams
have received bids to the NCAA Division III Championships May 22-24.
First-year
player Max Frey of Broken Arrow, Okla. (Tulsa Holland Hall), will
compete in the 32-draw men’s singles tournament at Claremont, Calif.
Sophomores Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll), and Cory
Kowal of Austin (Anderson) will play in the 16-team doubles event.
Sophomore Katy
Poettcker of Colleyville, Texas (Heritage), has been selected to
participate in the 32-player women’s singles championship at
Lawrenceville, Ga. Poettcker and sophomore Erin Jamison of St. Louis
(St. Joseph’s Academy) are listed as third alternates in the 16-draw
doubles championship.
Frey captured
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Region
singles title last fall in San Antonio, and earned All-America
honors. He went on to the National Small College Championships at
Mobile, Ala. Frey is sporting a 21-10 singles record (9-3 in the
fall, 12-7 in spring dual matches). He is currently ranked No. 5 in
the ITA West Region.
Cocanougher
and Kowal won the ITA regional doubles crown and received
All-America recognition. The duo took seventh place at the National
Small College Championships. Cocanougher and Kowal have a 22-9
overall record (9-3 in the fall, 13-6 in spring dual matches). The
two Tigers are ranked No. 2 in the West Region.
Poettcker was
a singles semifinalist at the ITA regional tournament. She has a
15-8 overall record (5-2 in the fall, 10-6 in spring dual matches).
Poettcker is ranked fourth in the West Region.
The Tiger men,
led by 23rd-year head coach Butch Newman, completed the season with
a 13-8 record. Trinity is ranked No. 15 in the nation by the ITA.
The Tiger women, guided by first-year head coach Ryan Takao, went
11-7 in dual matches, and are ranked No. 22 nationally.
