Tigers Sweep Singles and Doubles Regional Titles

Trinity took 11 singles players and five doubles teams to the competition, earning at least two semifinalists in both draws.

Nine of the 11 Tiger singles players were placed in the "A" draw, which was the main draw of the tournament, and included 64 players.  The remaining two were in the "B" draw, and both - Andrew Hoing and Jeremy Gold - advanced to the finals of that draw.  Hoing defeated Gold to win that competition.

Of the nine in the main singles action, seven made it to the quarterfinals, forcing teammates to start facing - and eliminating - each other.  Sophomore Varun Munjal and senior Oliver Gaines both made it to the semifinals, but Munjal had to default the semifinal match to his teammate.  Gaines went on to win the singles championship over a player from UT-Tyler to advance to the national championships.

In doubles action, four of Trinity's five teams won in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals, and three of those were in the semifinals.  Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal - both first-year players - won the tournament in a very exciting match against a team from hosting Hardin-Simmons University.  The Tiger duo won in a tiebreak to move to the championships in Mobile, Alabama.

The ITA National Small College Championships will be held from October 10-14 in Mobile, and will feature three Tiger athletes.  Gaines, Cocanougher, and Kowal will all be in the competition next Wednesday, and all three have earned All-America honors for the season by winning the regional titles.
