San Antonio -
The Tiger men's tennis team took a 9-0 win over SCAC foe
Birmingham-Southern College on Wednesday afternoon.
Trinity (10-3) is ranked
eighth in Division III, according to the latest Intercollegiate
Tennis Association's national poll.
The win is a milestone for
Tiger head coach Butch Newman. Newman, a member of Trinity's
Athletic Hall of Fame, reached 300 career wins as the men's head
coach with the victory. Newman's career record for the men's
tennis program is now 300-206, which is a winning percentage of .592
in his career.
Oliver Gaines teamed with
Ryan DeSantis for a win at No. 1 doubles, then also won 6-4, 6-0 at
the top singles spot. James Furr also won at both No. 2
singles and doubles, teaming with David Tran in doubles. Tran
earned a hard-fought comeback win at No. 3 singles (3-6, 6-3, 11-9).
Varun Munjal and Crisanto
Ramirez earned wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively, while
Bobby Cocanaugher won at the fifth singles spot. Cocanaugher
and Cory Kowal also teamed up for the third Tiger win in doubles.
The Tiger men will host
three teams ranked in the top 10 over the next three days, facing
off next against ninth-ranked Williams College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
