Trinity's men's tennis team, ranked ninth in Division III, opened the
2008 season with a 6-3 win over Division II's 32nd-ranked Midwestern
State University on Friday afternoon.
Trinity (1-0) took two out of three doubles matches, then won five of
six in singles. The Tigers will take on hosting Abilene Christian,
ranked 15th in D-II, tomorrow afternoon.
James Furr and David Tran won 31 doubles matches
combined last season - though not together - and added another win on
Friday, taking the No. 2 slot with an 8-5 victory.
First-years Bobby Cocanaugher and Cory Kowal, who
teamed up to win the ITA Regional Doubles title last fall, also won 8-5.
Furr and Cocanaugher also won in straight sets in
singles at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively. Top singles player and
All-American Oliver Gaines won 7-5, 6-4.
Also winning in singles was Varun Munjal.
Munjal, who tied Tran for the team lead in singles victories last
season, clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position.
Trinity will open its home schedule on February
15th against St. Edward's University at 3:00 p.m. The following
weekend, the Tigers travel to Gustavus Adolphus College for the ITA
Indoor National Championships. |
