The
Trinity University men’s and women’s tennis teams split
inter-divisional dual matches with the University of the Incarnate
Word Cardinals Saturday at the Tigers’ Delavan Tennis Stadium.
Trinity’s men, ranked No. 7 in the
NCAA Division III, beat the Cardinals, ranked No. 23 in Division II,
by a score of 6-3.
Tiger senior David Tran of Houston
(Cy-Falls) gave Trinity a 5-3 lead in the match with a 7-6 (5), 5-7,
7-5 win over UIW’s Michael Castillo at No. 3 singles. Earlier in the
day, the Tigers shut our Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
rival Millsaps 9-0. Trinity now stands at 7-3 and UIW is 5-3.
The Incarnate Word women beat Trinity
6-3. The clincher came at No. 5 singles as Cardinal junior Sarah
Carswell of San Antonio (Churchill) beat Tiger junior Cayleigh
Simpson of Corpus Christi 6-0, 6-2. UIW, which led 5-3 after that
point, improved to 8-1 on the season. Trinity has a 5-2 record.
Trinity’s men will next compete March
14-15 at the Stag Hen Classic in Claremont, Calif. UIW hosts
Schreiner University at 1 p.m. next Wednesday at Mabry Center.
The Tiger women take on the University
of Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer College March 15 and 16, respectively,
in California. The Cardinals will also host Schreiner next
Wednesday.
