The Tiger men (7-7), ranked No.
12 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the Division III ITA
poll (No. 3 in the West Region), shut out the Southwestern University
Pirates 9-0 Friday. The match was between two Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference teams, played at Berry Creek Country Club.
Trinity’s matches with Colorado College
and Austin College, scheduled for today and Saturday in Sherman, Texas,
were canceled because of weather damage to Austin College’s courts. The
coaches will attempt to reschedule the matches.
Tiger sophomores Bobby Cocanougher
and Cory Kowal, ranked No. 3 in the West Region, defeated Southwestern’s
Alex Lam and Charles Prince 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Senior Crisanto
Ramirez and sophomore Andrew Hoing captured No. 2 doubles, with an 8-3
win over Nick Parker and D’Artagnan Bebel. No. 3 doubles went to
first-year Max Frey and sophomore Don Murray, who beat Casey Guinn and
Griffin Ferry 8-0.
Frey, ranked second in the regional
singles poll, won the No. 1 match by beating Parker 6-2, 6-0.
Cocanougher, ranked No. 14 in the West, took No. 2 singles with a 6-3,
6-4 win over Lam. First-year John Runge beat Prince 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3
singles and Hoing defeated Bebel 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. Kowal took No. 5
singles 6-2, 6-0 over Guinn, and Ramirez rounded out the match at No. 6
singles, with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ferry.
The Tigers return home Friday, April
3, to host McMurry University, ranked No. 15 in the region, at 3 p.m. at
Delavan Tennis Stadium. UT-Tyler, ranked No. 14 nationally (No. 6 West
Region) visits the Trinity campus at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4. |
