After losing its first two matches at the ITA Indoor National
Championships, Trinity's men's tennis team finished the weekend on a
good note by beating the University of Mary Washington 7-2 on Saturday
night. Trinity (3-5) was swept 9-0 and 9-0
by both Washington (MO) University and the University of
California-Santa Cruz in earlier action.
The Tigers opened play by sweeping all three
doubles contests, then won four of six singles matches. Mary
Washington's only wins came at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
Bobby Cocanougher and Max Frey were both double
winners on Saturday night, taking points in both singles and doubles.
Cocanougher teamed with Cory Kowal for a win at No. 1 doubles, and he
also won at the No. 2 singles position. Frey won at No. 1 singles
and combined with Andrew Hoing for a win at No. 3 doubles.
Cocanougher's 6-4, 6-2 win in singles clinched the
match, giving Trinity a 5-0 lead at the time.
Trinity, ranked 12th in the nation and seeded
eighth in the tournament, finishes in seventh place.
The Tigers return home for a pair of matches on
Saturday, February 28, taking on the University of Texas-Dallas and
Schreiner University. It will begin a string of five straight home
matches for Trinity.
