An energized crowd watched the
Trinity University Tigers men’s tennis team, ranked No. 15 in the NCAA
Division III, beat the No. 12 UT-Tyler Patriots 8-1 Saturday at Varsity
Tennis Stadium. Trinity,
previously ranked third in the West Region, won its fourth consecutive
match and now stands at 9-7. UT-Tyler held a ranking of No. 6 in the
region.
The Tigers swept all three doubles
matches. Sophomores Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal, ranked No. 3 in
the region, edged fifth-ranked David Ashlock and Dustin Phillips 9-7 at
No. 1 doubles. Senior Crisanto Ramirez and sophomore Andrew Hoing teamed
up to beat Jordan Repsher and Robert Sajovich 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The
third doubles position went to first-year player Max Frey and sophomore
Don Murray, who were 8-3 winners over Caleb Bulls and Andrew Reznik.
UT-Tyler won its point in the match
at No. 1 singles, as Phillips, ranked No. 6 in the West Region, beat the
second-ranked Frey 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
The clincher for the Tigers came at
No. 4 singles, as Hoing beat Bulls 6-3, 7-5. Trinity took a 5-0 lead at
this point in the match.
Cocanougher, ranked 14th,
defeated No. 10 Sajovich 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 singles. The third
singles match went to the Tigers, with junior John Runge beating the 23rd-ranked
Ashlock 6-4, 6-4. Ramirez had a quick No. 6 singles match, with a 6-0,
6-0 win over Dallas Darnell. Kowal played the last match on the court
and beat Shaun Maddox 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
The Tigers travel to Abilene, Texas,
on Friday, April 10, to take on Hardin-Simmons University (No. 13 in the
region) at 10 a.m. |
