Hosts Erase 21-Point Lead to Beat Tigers
Pueblo, Colorado - Trinity's men's basketball team lost to Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday, as the team was unable to hold on to a 21-point lead early in the second half.
Trinity (1-1) led 34-17 at the half, and hit two layups to pull ahead by 21 points early in the second period. The lead was still 16 points at 13:17 after Trinity's Sean Devins knocked down two free throws. Brian Wood and Matt Brooks each hit three-pointers in the next two minutes for CSU-Pueblo, though, cutting the lead to just 10 points with more than 11 minutes remaining.
Three minutes later - after Pueblo cut the lead to single digits - Jason Morris put Trinity back on top by 11 with a three-point basket. Pueblo then went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 54-54 with 4:25 to play. The teams went back and forth over the next few minutes, and with the score tied at 59-59 with 1:44 to play, Brian Vecchio hit a three-pointer to put the home team on top for good. Peter Murray's three-pointer with 21 seconds left cut the lead to one, but the Tigers were unable to get off a shot in the final seconds that followed Brooks hitting 1-2 free throws.
Murray finished with a career-high 20 points to lead the Tigers in scoring, hitting 8-16 from the field and 3-3 from beyond the arc, and pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Devins hit 6-11 from the field on his way to 16 points, also swatting away five shots on defense, and grabbing seven rebounds.
Ross Burt came off the bench to score 10 points in the game, knocking down 2-3 three-pointers. Chad Stroberg had four assists and six rebounds, while Andy Bates finished with nine points and three rebounds to go with two assists.
Brooks led all scorers with 22 points for Pueblo, hitting 6-10 from the field and 4-8 from long distance. He also pulled in eight rebounds and handed out three assists. Mario Chavez had 12 points and two steals, while Wood had six rebounds and five assists.
Trinity will face its toughest challenge of the season on Tuesday, traveling to College Station to take on Division I Texas A&M University. Trinity will open its home schedule next weekend with the Trinity/Southwestern Thanksgiving Classic on November 26-27.
