Tigers Win Big Over Whitworth in Home Opener
San Antonio - Trinity's men's basketball team opened its home schedule with a 94-73 win over Whitworth College at the Trinity/Southwestern Thanksgiving Classic on Friday night.
Trinity (2-2) led 51-30 at the half, and led by as many as 28 in the second half. Whitworth scored the opening points on a three-pointer from Jon Young, but the Tigers scored 10 unanswered points to take the lead for good. Young scored the first nine points for the Pirates, and finished with 15 in the first half, keeping Whitworth in the game early in the period. After the lead was cut to just five (27-22), Trinity went on a 24-8 run to all but put the game out of reach and close out the half.
Jason Morris led five Trinity players in double digits with 21 points in 22 minutes of action, hitting 9-10 from the field. Andy Bates had a career-high 19 points and four assists, while Chad Stroberg added 12 points on 4-4 shooting - all three-pointers. Ross Burt and Jay Riola each chipped in with 10 points off the bench, which was a career-high for Riola.
Sean Devins led the team with nine rebounds and two blocks to go with four assists, while Peter Murray added seven points and eight boards. Trinity hit 36-62 (58.1%) from the field and 12-22 (54.5%) from three-point range.
Young finished with 23 points for the Pirates, while Bryan Williams added 14, and Lance Pecht chipped in with 12 points. Young hit 8-12 field goals and 7-10 threes in the game, also grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Whitworth shot 48.3% (29-60) from the field, hitting 9-24 (37.5%) from long-range.
Trinity out-rebounded Whitworth 39-22, including 15 offensive boards. In tomorrow's tournament action, Trinity will face Kalamazoo after Whitworth takes on Southwestern. In today's other action, Southwestern edged Kalamazoo 64-61.
