1998-1999 Women's Season Recap

What a finish to a season that witnessed both joy and sorrow.
After a very successful competitive campaign in the fall semester, T.U. swimmers and divers experienced the heartbreaking accidental death of sophomore Alex Rowe in mid-December. A popular and inspirational member of the team, Row loved to compete and was remembered by all who were close to the team as a swimmer who would race with abandon whenever the
opportunity availed itself. In the 1998 SCAC Invitational Championships he had captured 2nd place from an outside lane and earned the title of "outside smoker" for his daring "go for it" spirit. In the midst of mourning his loss, his teammates dedicated the rest of their season to his memory.

Over the weekend of February 18-19-20, the Trinity University men's swimming and diving team competed furiously each of the meet's three days and upset pre-meet favorites DePauw and Sewanee to capture the 1999 SCAC Championships. Competing at the University of the South campus in Sewanee, Tennessee.  Trinity University's women also did a splendid job, earning the SCAC runner-up spot behind the winning team from the University of the South. Trinity outscored DePauw University's women by nearly 300 points to take second place in the conference point tally. With two talented team members studying abroad during the spring semester, the Tigers from Texas could not keep pace with their rivals from Sewanee.

Leading the way for Trinity was first year Christy Jayne and sophomore Shannon Clower, who each won two events. Jayne snared individual titles in the 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke, while Clower captured the 500 and the 1650 freestyle events. Joining them on the winner's stand was junior Suski Sokol, who took the 200 butterfly as she sped to an NCAA consideration time. The Trinity entry of Lynn Lyons, Erika Chow, Sarah Armstrong, and Christy Jayne also won the 200 freestyle relay.
