Women's Preview
.....One thing for sure. The Tigers will win the SCAC women's swimming and diving title for the year 2000. The fact is that the SCAC has three teams with the potential to win the conference championship in February and all three have the same school mascot. The question is - which Tiger will prevail?
The University of the South took home the SCAC team trophy last year. This season, Trinity and DePauw will be out to dethrone Sewanee's women when the conference teams gather to do battle in Greencastle, Indiana for the first championship meet of the new millenium. If Trinity is to have a chance, all of its seniors must step up and lead the way. According to Coach John Ryan, "The key to a win at DePauw is senior leadership."
Sarah Armstrong, Erika Chow, Suski Sokol, Leslie Weeter, Lynn Lyons, Ashley Weeter, Erica Clower, and Grace Fogg will have the opportunity to finish their collegiate careers on a winning note. Hopefully, it is a goal to which they will commit fully in the weeks and months preceeding the 2000 SCAC Championship meet. If they fail to lead, a win will be difficult. The coach has stated that "It's in their hands and that means they can choose their own destiny. How cool can it get?"
Together, these women have won a lot of big races and two SCAC Invitational team titles. Sarah Scott, Erika Chow, and Lynn Lyons have each been on several SCAC winning relay teams, including the 1999 200 freestyle relay. Suski Sokol won the 1999 200 butterfly title, while Leslie Weeter won the same race in 1997 and 1998. She has also led the SCAC in the 400 IM on one occassion and can be a top three threat there. Her twin sister Ashley holds Trinity's school records in the 50 freestyle and both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. She has been hampered by arthritic joints for several years and was out of the water last season. That's the negative. Coach John Ryan prefers to emphasize the positive and has pointed out that "Ashley is a fierce competitor and is going to help us, even on a limited training program. She likes to win and you can't teach the desire to do that."
While Coach Ryan maintains that it is up to the seniors to provide the leadership, T.U. has two All-Americans prepared to put some points on the board when the team travels to DePauw in February. Junior Shannon Clower won the 1999 SCAC 500 and 1650 freestyle titles and scored at the NCAA Championships in the latter event (17:43.96). Sophomore Christy Jayne captured the 1999 SCAC 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke while finishing runner-up in the 200 IM. She scored at the NCAA Championships in the 400 IM (4:37.21), just missing former All-American Sarah Scott's school record.
An event-by-event review of Trinity's line-up for the 1999-2000 season looks like this:
Men's Preview:
...After winning the Inaugural SCAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in February of 1999, Trinity graduated five seniors who each scored in the big final of 3 individual events at that meet. A slightly smaller team will represent T.U. during the fall semester, after which diver Marc Tiegel will join the list of alumni as he completes work on his undergraduate degree. All of this bodes well for SCAC rivals Sewanee and DePauw (now much deeper by virtue of a big first-year class).
Trinity will be led by senior team captain Joseph Moore, who earned All-American honors in the 50 and the 100 freestyle events in 1999 by finaling in the NCAA Championships in both races. Moore has won both the 50 FR and the 100 FR in three consecutive SCAC Championship meets. Last year, he also led Trinity to record settling wins in the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relay events.
Sophomore Dylan Stentiford was Trinity's next-most prolific SCAC title meet scorer, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle events in 1999 and finishing runner-up to Moore in the 100 freestyle. Unfortunately, T.U. swim fans will have to wait until the spring semester to see Stentiford on the blocks due to end-of-summer shoulder surgery. The team will be much tougher once he's back in the line-up.
Another sophomore Andrew Gnann, figured big time in Trinity's SCAC team title last spring. Affectionately nicknamed "Bama" by his teammates, Gnann was second best in the conference in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
Yet another T.U. sophomore, Will Von Rosenberg helped Moore, Stentiford, and Gnann dominate the SCAC relay scene in 1999. A sprinter by trade, Von Rosenberg provided the extra speed required to enable the Tigers from Texas to record some of the nation's best times in all three freestyle relays ( ) and the 200 medley relay ( ).
An event-by-event review of Trinity's line-up for the 1999-2000 season looks like this:
| Sprint freestyle Jospeh Moore leads the way, joined by sophomore Will Von Rosenberg, junior Noah Wallace, sophomore Mac McCall, and first-years Stephen Eustis and Cass Sobek. Middle distance freestyle
Out of commision for the fall semester, T.U. needs sophomore Dylan Stentiford healthy and hungry in January. First-year Dan Gonzalez has a great work ethic and will contribute many points to the Tiger's cause.
Backstroke
Sophomore Andrew Gnann was the 1999 SCAC runner-up in the 100. He will get help from junior Curt Kieffer, sophomore Will Von Rosenberg, and first-year Lee Ferguson.
Butterfly
Gnann will be quick in the 100, where he will be joined by junior Noah Wallace, sophomore Will Von Rosenberg, and first-years Dan Gonzalez and Kyle Cavanaugh.
Breaststroke
The team is a little deeper here than any previous season. Sophomores Adam Bellinger and Ryan Stevens will be joined by sophomore Mac McCall and first-year Suhada Ratnayake.
Individual medley
Ryan Stevens has the potential to break the school record in the 200 IM this season if all goes well. Adam Bellinger and Nathan Fowkes will provide plenty of talent to this specialty event.
Diving
Former All-American Marc Tiegel is in his final campaign for the Tigers. He will be supported by senior Bryan Hummel and first-year novice diver Matt Nelson.
Freestyle relays
All four members of last year's SCAC winning 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relay teams are back. If Dylan Stentiford is healthy by the winter recess and gets at least six weeks of training before the conference championships, T.U. will again be tough in all three events.
Medley relays
Stentiford, Moore, Gnann, and Von Rosenberg won the 200 MR last year. All must be red hot if the Tigers are to beat DePauw and Sewanee. The men from the mountain top in Tennessee (Sewanee) will be the heavy favorite to win the 400 this year. |
