Assistant Coach Andrew Lee
This year marks the start of Coach Andrew Lee’s
fourth season as the Sprint Coach at Trinity University. The Sprint
Corp under his leadership played a major role in the Women’s team
winning it’s 2nd consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship title, as well as the
Men’s team placing 3rd in that competition.
On the Women’s side at the
SCAC Championships the sprinters out scored their competition by
qualifying 3 individuals for the finals in all of the open Sprint events
(100M, 200M, & 400M dashes), as well as sweeping both the 4 X 100M & 4 X
400M Relay Championship titles. In addition, the Women also placed 1st
& 2nd in both the 100M and 400M Hurdle races. This balanced
effort garnered a total of 4 SCAC Championship performances, as well as
4 All-SCAC performances. Coach Lee was also instrumental in the
coaching and development of 2nd year Student Athlete
Stephanie Hankins, who qualified for the NCAA Division III National
Championships in the Heptathlon. Stephanie went on to finish 15th
in the nation in 2004. She also earned the SCAC Female Track Athlete of
the Year Award for the 2nd year in a row.
The Men’s Sprint Corp did not
fare as well due to several key athletes sustaining injuries which
prevented them from competing to their full potential throughout the
2004 Outdoor Season. Nevertheless, collectively they put up a valiant
effort in placing 3rd overall at the SCAC Championships. The
Men’s team qualified 2 Sprinters for the finals of the 100M, 200M, and
400M dashes, and posted an All-SCAC performance by placing 3rd
in the 4 X 100M Relay and 5th in the 4 X 400M Relay
respectively. Also, Junior Sprinter and Team Captain Anthony Smith
earned All-SCAC honors individually by placing 2nd in the
400M Dash.
Coach Lee is a member of the
United States Track Coaches Association, a USATF Certified Track & Field
Official, and a USATF Level II Certified Sprints/Hurdles/Relays Coach.
He is also currently in the pipeline through the USATF Coaches Education
Program to become Level III Certified in the Advanced Sprints Event Area
in the very near future. Combined, he has been involved with the sport
in the capacity of an Athlete, Official, Supporter, and Coach for nearly
20 years. He is well known and respected throughout all levels of the
Track & Field Community, and is regarded by many of his peers as a
“TOP–SHELF” Sprint Coach.
Prior to joining the
collegiate coaching ranks, Coach Lee served as the Sprints, hurdles, and
Relays Coach for the San Antonio Heat Track & Field Club in San Antonio,
Texas; where he still continues to serve. The San Antonio Heat Track &
Field Club participates in the Summer AAU Track & Field Program, as well
as in USATF & NSSF sanctioned Elite High School Indoor & Outdoor
Competitions across the United States. During his tenure with the San
Antonio Heat & Field Club, he has been directly involved with the
coaching of at least 90 athletes that have qualified for the AAU
National Junior Olympics. The athletes that were trained by Coach Lee
during the 2004 Summer Season of competition had many outstanding
performances. Through their hard work and dedication, his Sprinters
earned AAU All-American honors (top 8) in every sprint event at the 2004
AAU National Junior Olympics in the Young Men’s and Young Women’s age
group to include the 100M Dash, 200M Dash, 400M Dash, 800M Run, 4 X
100M Relay, 4 X 400M Relay, and 4 X 800M Relay.
In conjunction with his duties
at Trinity University and with the San Antonio Heat Track & Field Club,
Coach Lee also serves as the Personal Sprint Coach for several Elite
High School, Collegiate, and Post-Collegiate Track & Field Athletes in
the Greater San Antonio Area. Last season this group included the 2004
San Antonio Express-News Boys Track Athlete of the Year; Otis McDaniel
III. While training with Coach Lee, this talented young sprinter became
the Texas Class 5A State Champion in the 200M Dash, the Texas Class 5A
Silver Medalist in the 100M Dash, a 2004 USA Junior National
Championships Qualifier, and a medal winner in both the 100M Dash and
200M Dash at two Nationally recognized Elite High School Championship
Meets; the Great Southwest Track & Field Classic in New Mexico and the
Golden West Track & Field Invitational Meet in California.
While adding to his growing
list of responsibilities and endeavors, Coach Lee is presently
collaborating and consulting with several nationally and world renowned
Sprint Coaches, Biomechanics Specialists, and Strength & Conditioning
Experts to aid him in the planning and organization of what will be
known as the “SOUTH TEXAS SPEED DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY.” This entity is
envisioned to serve as a provider of comprehensive science based
“Multi-Sport” specific training for all “Speed-Power” athletes (Track,
Football, Baseball, Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, etc….) by identifying
the necessary Energy System requirements, as well as systematically and
dynamically addressing the overall components of Speed, Strength,
Flexibility, Coordination, and Endurance to enhance athletic
performance.
Coach Lee is a proud father
and husband and credits his wife, Cynthia, who has played a major role
in his success by supporting, understanding, and encouraging him to
pursue his personal goals. Their two youngest children are both
athletes and share Coach Lee’s passion for sports. Andrew Jr. (16) is a
High School Varsity Basketball Player and Jessica (19) is a Collegiate
Sprinter at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. |
