Preliminaries - Friday
Sewanee's men's and women's teams started off strong on Friday, earning the top times in the 200 Yard Medley Relays. Sewanee's women earned the top two positions in the race, with Trinity and Rhodes coming next, followed by Southwestern. The men's race saw two DePauw teams follow Sewanee, followed closely by Trinity and Rose-Hulman.
In the 400 IM, Trinity held both of the top times, with Christy Jayne winning the race for the women, followed by Martha E. Taylor of DePauw and Dana Woods from Sewanee. Shannon Clower and Caesie McHenry of Trinity rounded out the top five. On the men's side, Ryan Van Dar Kar set a new SCAC Championship AND SCAC Open Meet record with his time of 4:07.93, which also put him ahead of the NCAA 'B' cut. David Breiding of Rose-Hulman came in second in the race, followed by three Trinity swimmers (Adam Bellinger, Tait Ecklund, and Nathan Fowkes).
The 200 Butterfly featured Trinity and DePauw in the top spots. Christina Pikla qualified for the NCAA's for the women's race with a time of 59.53. Martha E. Taylor from DePauw was next, followed by trinity's Andrea Lucas. Kelly Savage (Rhodes) and Ann Tarter (Centre) rounded out the top five that all finished less than four seconds apart. Dan Garrison, the SCAC record-holder in this event, finished first for the men with a time of 51.33 seconds, which puts him ahead of the 'B' cut in the NCAA's. Teammate Clint Troxel finished .31 seconds behind Garrison, followed by Andrew Gnann, Stephen Eustis, and Andrew Callahan, who are from Trinity.
The next event was the 200 Freestyle, which was won by Trinity on both the men's and women's side. Ingrid Udris won for the women, followed by teammate Stephanie Walla. Next was J.H. Chapman of Sewanee, Blythe Ashcraft of Centre, and Julie Mediamolle of Rhodes. For the men, it was Dylan Stentiford in the lead, followed by Sewnaee's Ryan Bouldin and Chris Carter. Landon Williams from DePauw and Dan Gonzalez of Trinity rounded out the top five.
The 100 Breaststroke was won by DePauw - Julie Culbertson for the women and Elliott Mueller for the men. Following Culbertson were Sewanee's Laura Cook, Southwestern's Christy Garcia, and Trinity's Kristi Zugay and Christy Anderson. Mueller's time of 59.13 seconds narrowly qualified him for the 'B' pool of the NCAA's, and he was followed closely by Sewanww's Mike Maggard. Next was Trinity's Suhada Ratnayake, then Sewanee's Adam Whiteside, and DePauw's Peter Beckette.
The 100 backstroke was won by Trinity's Stephanie Walla and Zach Coburn. Walla was follwed byu DePauw's Katie Beehler and Katie Reis, and Sewanee's Sara Atchison and Hadley Dempsey. Coburn made the NCAA 'A' cut with his time of 51.34 seconds, which is a SCAC Championship and SCAC Open Meet record. Coburn's time automatically qualifies him to compete in the NCAA Meet. He was follwed by Andrew Cornett of DePauw, Andrew Gnann and Will von Rosenberg of Trinity, and Josh Heisler of DePauw.
Trinity also won both of the consolation finals for the 800 Freestyle Relay at the conclusion of the first session. Sewanee and DePauw finished 2nd and 3rd in both the men's and the women's races. The finals will be held in the second session tonight.
