Trinity Women Take the Lead; DePauw Men Still in Front

Two teams have emerged from day two of the 2001 SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships with the lead. Trinity's women took the lead from Sewanee tonight, after trailing by 13 points going into today. That lead, however, is anything but safe. The score is Trinity - 620 points and Sewanee - 616 points after two days, making the finals of the final day the do-or-die time for the title-chasing teams. DePauw is in third place in the women's competition with 518 points.

The men's leader is still DePauw, who took a commanding 62.5-point lead into today's finals. Trinity's men, however, are moving up, gaining 27 points on the leaders this evening. DePauw (685 points) still controls its own destiny, but Trinity (649.50) has closed the gap over the past 24-hour period, and may be able to do the same tomorrow. Sewanee stands in third with 49 points.

The diving finals finished strong as DePauw took the top three men's and women's scores, giving both of the teams big points to begin the night, and conclude the diving portion of the meet.

The 200 Medley Relay began the swimming festivities on Friday night, with both teams making the 'B' cut for the NCAA's, and both setting SCAC records as well. Sewanee's women's relay team set the SCAC Championship Meet record with their time of 1:54.64, while DePauw's men's team set both a SCAC Championship and SCAC Open Meet record with a time of 1:34.69.

Next was the 400 IM, which was won by two Trinity swimmers. Both Christy Jayne and Ryan Van Dar Kar made the 'B' cut for nationals, and Van Dar Kar set the SCAC Championship and SCAC Open Meet records.

The 100 Fly was dominated by Trinity and DePauw, with each team winning three of the top six spots (men and women top three). Trinity went 1-2 in the women's race, while DePauw did the same for the men. Christina Pikla of Trinity qualified for the NCAA's with her time, while both Clint Troxel and Dan Garrison did the same in their race - all under the 'B' cut time.

In the 200 Free, the same feat as above was repeated, but this time by Trinity and Sewanee. Sewanee's J.H. Chapman made the NCAA 'B' cut with her victory, followed closely by two Trinity swimmers. For the men Dylan Stentiford set a new mark in the SCAC, for both the championships and the open meets. He also recorded an automatic qualifying time in the event for the NCAA's. Two Sewanee men's swimmers finished behind him.

The 100 Breaststroke was won by Sewanee and DePauw. Julie Culbertson won the race for the DU Tigers, while Mike Maggard won for the UoS Tigers. Maggard made the NCAA 'B' cut with his time of 59.06 in the race.

In the 100 Backstroke, Trinity's Zach Coburn and DePauw's Katie Reis each qualified for the NCAA's. Reis set new SCAC Championship and Open Meet records in her women's race, while Coburn's time would have been a SCAC record had he not broken the record earlier in the day en route to an automatic qualifying time.

In the 800 Free Relay, Trinity won both events to close out the day. The men's team made the NCAA 'B' cut with their time.
