Trinity Women, DePauw Men Looking
to Maintain Leads for the Conference Titles

The final day of competition in the 2001 SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships is shaping up to be quite an exciting event.

The women's 200 Yard Backstroke started off the day, and right away there was excitement in the making. Trinity's Stephanie Walla set a new SCAC Championship Meet record, and qualified for the NCAA 'B' pool with her time of 2:09.25. On the men's side, Trinity's Zach Coburn accomplished the same feats as his teammate with a time of 1:52.74.

The 100 Freestyle featured Sewanee and DePauw for the women and the men, respectively. J.H. Chapman for the women posted a time of 54.24 seconds, while Dan Garrison for the men had a time of 46.63 seconds - good for a qualifying time in the NCAA 'B' pool. Trinity's Andrew Gnann also qualified with his time of 46.72, narrowly trailing Garrison.

In the 200 Breaststroke, Trinity's Christy Jayne and Sewanee's Mike Maggard won two very close races. Neither broke any records or qualified for nationals, but the women's race was decided by .34 seconds, and the men's was decided by .67 seconds.

Next up, in the 200 Butterfly, the leading teams took the top times, as Trinity's Christina Pikla and DePauw's Clint Troxel won the Prelim. races. Pikla set a new SCAC Championship Meet record with her time of 2:10.80, which also made the NCAA 'B' cut. Troxel didn't set any records, but won the race by nearly three seconds.

In the 400 Freestyle Relay, Trinity's women took the top time, while Rose-Hulman's men won their race.

The timed 1,650 Freestyle Finals will be completed in the evening session. Two heats remain in the race.

Things have really heated up for this day of finals action, and the two teams at the top are still fighting to stay where they are in the standings to earn their SCAC Championship. Stay tuned for the results!!!
