- Trinity's softball team lost its opening game of the NCAA West
Regional Tournament to the University of La Verne on Thursday morning.
Trinity (29-13) lost 4-1 to La Verne, and La Verne
has now taken two of three games from Trinity this season. The
pair split a doubleheader in San Antonio late in the regular season.
Neither team had a hit through the first two
innings, but Debbie Bugarin broke that up with an infield single with
one out in the third for La Verne. After the inning's second out,
Jodi Lindsay hit a two-run homer - the 48th of the year for the Leopards
- to put La Verne out in front 2-0.
The Leopards added two more runs in the inning -
one of which was unearned - to make it a 4-0 lead heading into the
bottom of the third. In the home half of the inning, Trinity
loaded the bases with one out, but could manage just one run in the
inning, leaving the bases loaded.
Trinity left nine total runners on base, leaving
at least one player stranded in all but two innings in the game.
Erin Mulvey fell to 12-6 on the year, allowing
three earned runs on six hits through seven innings of work.
Mulvey also struck out seven batters without allowing a walk. The
seven K's give Mulvey 301 for her career, easily the best career mark in
school history.
Jamie Williams was 2-3 in the game, cracking two
of the team's three hits. The third came from Mandy Chastang - a
one-out double to left field with one out in the sixth.
Trinity will face either Hardin-Simmons or
Linfield tomorrow, depending on the rest of the day's action. The
Tigers need a win tomorrow to avoid elimination in the regional
tournament. |
