- The Trinity softball team continued Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Austin College on Saturday
afternoon. Trinity (16-8, 4-2) won 8-0 in
the opening game, and then took the second game 14-8 in eight innings.
Austin College tied the game in the sixth, and after a scoreless
seventh, the Tigers posted a six-run inning to secure the win.
In game one, the Tigers opened the scoring with
two runs in the second, followed by three consecutive scoring innings
from the fourth through the sixth and final inning. Trinity had 13
hits in the opener.
In the second game, Trinity took a 2-0 lead after
the top of the third, but the Kangaroos tied the game with two runs in
the bottom of the inning. The Tigers answered with a three-run
third and a three-run fourth, with Austin adding three runs of its own
in the two innings.
Trailing 8-5 in the sixth, Austin put the first
two runners on to set up a three-run homer to tie the game. In the
eighth, Trinity had a home run of its own to spark the big inning and
take the Saturday sweep.
Erin Mulvey tossed a two-hit shutout in the
opening game, giving up two walks and striking out nine hitters.
She took no-hitter into the fourth inning of game one. In the
second game, Mulvey came on in relief of Jillian Degerness, allowing
just one hit over the final two innings, and striking out six batters.
Mulvey improves to 8-4 this season with the two victories.
Michelle Gossein and Lee Smith both finished with
three hits in the opening game, while Katie Longacre added two more.
Smith also had two runs and two RBI in the first game.
In game two, Christina Carni tied two school
single game records with a standout offensive performance. Carni
finished 4-6 with three runs and a record-tying six RBI. Three of
her hits were doubles, which also ties the school record.
Smith added four more hits to her day's total in
the second game, going 4-5 with two runs and one RBI. Kristin
Yurasits was 3-5 with three runs scored, and Kate Wright also had three
hits and a pair of runs. Yurasits recorded her 100th hit in the
opening game, and with four hits on the day, she moves into fifth in
school history for her career.
Longacre and Gossein added two more hits in game
two, while Fodness hit her third homer of the season in the eighth
inning. Fodness finished 2-4 with one run and two RBI.
Gossein scored two runs, while Longacre drove in two more for the
Tigers.
Trinity and Austin will conclude their SCAC
weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, beginning at
12:00 p.m. |
