- Trinity's softball team finished off a Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference weekend sweep of Austin College on Sunday with a
pair of five-inning wins. Trinity (18-8,
6-2) won 14-0 and 9-1 on Sunday, improving on yesterday's 8-0 and 14-8
victories. Both games lasted just five innings today.
The Tigers opened today's action with a five-run
first inning that was highlighted by a leadoff home run by Kate Wright.
Trinity then added seven more runs in the second inning to take full
control of the game.
It turned out that all Trinity needed in this game
was Wright's leadoff homer, as Erin Mulvey (9-4) tossed a three-hit
shutout against the Kangaroos offense. Mulvey struck out six and
walked just one in the game.
Wright finished 2-4 with two runs and four RBI in
the game, while Katie Longacre and Michelle Gossein each scored a pair
of runs.
Amy Blaha had one of the best offensive
performances of her career, going 4-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Jamie Williams also added two hits and two runs, and Kristin Yurasits
went 2-3 with one run and two RBI. Lee Smith drove in a pair of
runs as well.
In the second game, the Tigers jumped out early
once again with four runs in the first inning. The four runs came
from a pair of two-run homers in the inning. Williams hit the
first one to get Trinity on the board, and then Erin Fodness hit her
fourth homer of the season to tie the school single season record.
Her home run also sets a new team record for home runs in a single
season.
Jillian Degerness (7-1) allowed just one run on
three hits in the the complete-game victory, striking out five batters.
Fodness finished 2-3 with two runs and three RBI,
while Williams was 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
Longacre and Wright both recorded two hits in the
second game, while Wright and Gossein also scored two runs each.
Trinity returns home for the team's final regular
season home game on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. against LaGrange College.
The Tigers will then travel to Millsaps to wrap up conference play with
doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. |
