- Trinity's softball team opened its 2007 season with a pair of
losses to the NAIA's ninth-ranked Houston Baptist University on Tuesday.
Trinity (0-2) lost 4-1 in the opening game,
followed by a 9-1 defeat in game two. The Huskies finished with 14
hits in the two games, but managed only two in the first game.
Senior Erin Mulvey (0-1) pitched five no-hit
innings for the Tigers in the first game, but ran into trouble in the
sixth after allowing back-to-back walks with one out. The first
hit for Houston Baptist was an RBI single after the second walk,
followed by a three-run homer for a four-run inning. Mulvey struck
out six batters in the game.
Cheri Wood (1-0) struck out 13 for the Huskies,
giving up just one run on five hits. Melissa Wright hit the
game-winning homer for HBU.
Sophomore Jamie Williams was 2-2 with a run
scored in the game, while first-year Christina Carni was 1-3 and drove
in Trinity's only run in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kristin
Yurasits and first-year Katie Longacre also had hits for the Tigers.
In the second game, the Houston Baptist bats
came to life with 12 total hits and six runs in the first three innings.
Melissa Johnson (0-1) was charged with the loss,
giving up four earned runs - five total - on six hits through 2.1
innings and striking out three. Jillian Degerness came on in
relief in the third, allowing four runs on six hits the rest of the way.
Williams had another hit and another run in the
second game, while Longacre came off the bench to crack the second hit
of her career.
Carni was the team's run producer once again
with the lone RBI, while Lee Smith finished 1-2 in the second game.
Kate Wright was 1-3 from the leadoff spot, wrapping up the team's total
of four hits in game two.
Erika Vargas was 2-2 with two runs and two RBI
in the second game for the Huskies - including a solo homer to lead off
the fifth inning. A.J. DeVries and Laurie Skelton also had two
hits for HBU, while Krissie Conner scored two runs.
Trinity will play another home doubleheader on
Saturday against Schreiner University. Game one is scheduled for a
1:00 p.m. start. |
