- Trinity's softball team split a doubleheader to open Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon against
Hendrix College. Trinity (11-7, 1-1) won the
first game 6-3, but suffered a 6-0 shutout in game two. Hendrix
allowed just four hits in the second game, and both teams were scoreless
through six innings.
In that second game, both starting pitchers went
four full innings without allowing a hit. Trinity's Karen Fisher -
in just her third appearance this season - walked three but didn't allow
a run or a hit through four innings. Kim Tallent tossed a four-hit
shutout for the Warriors.
After the two teams continued without scoring
through the fifth and sixth innings, Hendrix finally put together a
string of hits to get on the scoreboard - all with two outs in the
seventh inning. The highlight for the Warriors was a grand slam by
Tallent, who also pitched the shutout defensively.
In the opening game, it was Trinity that jumped
out in front early, scoring four runs in the first two innings.
The Tigers then answered a run by Hendrix with a two-run fifth to make
it 6-1, and then held off a rally in the seventh to take the win.
Kate Wright (1-1) took the decision in both games,
earning the win in the opener, but was charged with the loss in game
two.
Christina Carni had four hits to lead the Tigers
on offense, including a 3-3 performance in game one. Carni drove
in two runs in the game, as well as hitting her third double of the
season. She also collected one of four team hits in game two.
Lee Smith had two hits in the first game, but
finished 0-2 in the second. Katie Longacre was 1-3 in the second
game, hitting a double for Trinity's only extra-base hit of that game.
Longacre also had a hit in the opening game, scoring one run.
Trinity and Hendrix will conclude the SCAC-opening
weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow at noon. |
